By Dr. Constance Santego, as told to Elemental Reset

The Reset You Didn't Know You Needed

Natural medicine pioneer, educator, and bestselling author Dr. Constance Santego on elemental living, why healing isn't linear, and what it really means to return to yourself.

Before Dr. Constance Santego became one of the most sought-after voices in natural medicine, education, and wellness publishing, she was a practitioner searching for answers her own training couldn't provide. Decades of study through natural medicine traditions, elemental healing, and her own personal transformation brought her to a singular conviction: the greatest reset isn't physical. It's a return to self. This is her story, her philosophy, and her invitation.

Elemental Reset: Let's begin at the beginning. What was the moment you knew the conventional medical model wasn't enough?

Dr. Constance Santego: There wasn't one moment — it was more like a slow erosion of certainty. I'd been practicing for seven years. I had patients doing everything "right" by every clinical measure, and they were still suffering. I started asking: what are we missing? What is medicine not seeing?

I remember one patient — a woman in her late forties, completely devoted to her health protocols. Labs were perfect. Sleep optimized. Diet clean. And yet she came every month and said the same thing: "I feel like I'm disappearing." That phrase haunted me. Because I realized I had nothing to offer her. Not from where I was standing.

The greatest reset isn't the one you plan for. It's the one that finds you — usually in your most exhausted, most honest moment.

ER: What did you do with that haunting?

Dr. Santego: I went searching. Not in the journals — I knew those already. I went into the older traditions. Ayurvedic medicine. Chinese five-element theory. The shamanic healing traditions of the Americas. And what I found was consistent across all of them: they didn't begin with the body. They began with the elements — with the understanding that we are not separate from nature, we are an expression of it. When we lose our elemental alignment, we lose ourselves.

That's when everything shifted. I started practicing what I now call Elemental Medicine — working with the elemental patterns that govern how someone holds tension, holds grief, holds unspoken truth in their body. The results were astonishing. Not because I'd found a new protocol, but because I'd finally found the right questions.

The Four Elements in the Body

ER: Tell us about the four elements as you work with them. What does each one mean physically?

Dr. Santego: Fire is your life force — metabolic energy, passion, capacity for transformation. When fire is healthy, you wake with purpose. When depleted, you feel burned out in the most literal sense: the fire has gone out. We see this everywhere now — people achieving everything and feeling completely cold inside.

Earth is stability and nourishment, the body's capacity to receive and integrate. So many people can produce endlessly but cannot receive — cannot take in love, rest, nourishment. That's an earth imbalance. Water is flow — emotion, intuition, the ability to move through grief and change. Air is intellect, communication, the nervous system's capacity to process. When these four are in rhythm, the body knows how to heal. When they're not — that's where chronic symptoms live.

ER: What does a "reset" actually look like?

Dr. Santego: A reset is a return. Not to some idealized past version of yourself — but to the self that exists beneath all the adaptations, the compensations, the armor built over decades of living. Every chronic pattern I've worked with — pain, autoimmunity, anxiety, insomnia — is the body's brilliant attempt to protect something that never got to heal. The reset is the moment the body realizes it's safe to stop protecting. That it can finally put down the sword.

The Return to Self

ER: The theme of this inaugural issue is "The Return to Self." What does that phrase mean to you personally?

Dr. Santego: It means coming home to your own authority. We live in a culture that has taught people to distrust their own bodies, their own knowing, their own instincts. The return to self is a radical act. It means learning to listen again. To trust the signals your body sends. To honor the wisdom that lives in your own cellular intelligence — wisdom that predates everything you've ever been told about how you should live.

For me, it meant the moment I stopped trying to optimize myself and started listening to what I actually needed. I was running on pure fire — pure drive, pure ambition — and my body was screaming in a language I'd trained myself to ignore. The return was learning to hear it again. Learning that rest is medicine. That grief is medicine. That solitude is medicine.

ER: You've said that healing isn't linear. Why does that framing matter so much?

Dr. Santego: Because we've sold people a lie. The lie is: do the right things in the right order and you will arrive at wellness and stay there. But the body doesn't work linearly. Life doesn't work linearly. Healing is more like a spiral — you revisit the same territory, but from a different vantage point each time. What looks like a setback is often a deepening.

When someone comes in devastated because they "fell back into old patterns," the first thing I do is celebrate. Because if they can see the pattern, they are no longer fully inside it. That's not regression — that's awareness. And awareness is the beginning of every real shift.

The Invitation

ER: What is the one thing you wish every reader of this first issue knew?

Dr. Santego: That you already know. Somewhere inside you — beneath the noise, the doubt, the years of being told to defer to someone else's authority about your own body — you know what you need. You know what's working and what isn't. You know which relationships drain your fire and which ones light it. You know when you're living from fear and when you're living from truth.

The work isn't adding more information. It's learning to trust what you already know. That's the reset. That's the return. That's what Elemental Reset is here to support.

This conversation with Dr. Constance Santego set the compass for everything Elemental Reset is and will become. Her insistence on returning to the elemental — to the intelligence already present in the body — is the thread running through every article, every practice, and every video in this magazine. We are grateful to launch our inaugural issue in her company. The reset has begun. — The Elemental Reset Editorial Team
