Energetic Healing Rx: Overwhelm
By Dr. Constance Santego
When everything feels like too much, the body, mind, and energy field are sending the same message. Here is your prescription for coming back to ground.

Each issue of Elemental Reset includes an Energetic Healing Rx — a prescription written not for a pharmacy, but for your whole self. Body. Mind. Energy. Spirit. This month, we address the condition most people walk in carrying but rarely name out loud: overwhelm.

Element Connection — Earth

The Earth element governs our capacity for grounding, support, safety, and balance. When Earth energy is depleted, we lose our center. We cannot hold ourselves steady. Everything feels like too much because we have lost the ground beneath us. This month’s prescription returns us to Earth.

What Is Overwhelm?

Overwhelm is not weakness. It is not a character flaw. It is not evidence that you are doing something wrong.

Overwhelm is a signal.

It is the body, the nervous system, the energy field, and the spirit all sending the same message at the same time: the load exceeds the resources currently available.

In the language of the Five Elements, overwhelm is what happens when the Earth element becomes depleted. Earth governs our capacity to feel held, supported, grounded, and nourished. When we give more than we receive — when we carry more than we can metabolize — Earth energy becomes exhausted. We lose our center. We lose our footing. Everything begins to feel like too much.

Overwhelm is not a sign that you are failing. It is a sign that something needs to change — and that your body has run out of subtle ways to tell you.

Common Signs and Symptoms

You May Be in Overwhelm If…

✓ You feel exhausted but cannot rest

✓ Your thoughts race without resolution

✓ Small decisions feel enormous

✓ You feel emotionally flat or numb

✓ Your shoulders are chronically tight

✓ You struggle to be present

✓ You feel like you are always behind

✓ Digestion feels off or unsettled

✓ You cannot remember the last time you felt rested

✓ You feel responsible for everything and everyone

If several of these feel familiar, you are not alone. And you are not broken. You are simply depleted — and depletion has a prescription.

Body Perspective

Physiologically, overwhelm is a state of sustained sympathetic nervous system activation — what we commonly call the stress response. When the brain perceives that demands exceed available resources, it signals the adrenal glands to release cortisol and adrenaline. The body braces. The heart rate rises. The muscles tighten — particularly the upper trapezius, jaw, and diaphragm.

In the short term, this response is adaptive. It helps us meet urgent demands. But when it becomes chronic — when the nervous system never fully returns to a parasympathetic state — the body begins to wear down.

Digestion slows. Sleep becomes fragmented. Immunity is suppressed. The upper trapezius accumulates tension that never fully releases. Breathing becomes shallow, which perpetuates the cycle.

The body in overwhelm is not malfunctioning. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do — just for too long, with no recovery window.

Emotional Perspective

Emotionally, overwhelm often comes wrapped in layers that are harder to name than the surface stress.

Beneath the frantic calendar there is often a belief: I must do it all, or it will fall apart.

Beneath the inability to rest there is often a fear: if I stop, I will lose control of everything I have worked to hold together.

Beneath the exhaustion there is often unspoken grief — for the version of yourself who had more ease, more space, more joy.

Overwhelm frequently carries a component of resentment — the quiet accumulation of saying yes when we meant no, of carrying what was never ours to hold. It may also carry perfectionism, hypervigilance, and a deep-seated difficulty asking for help or accepting support.

The emotional prescription is not to think your way out of overwhelm. It is to feel your way through the layers — gently, with curiosity, without judgment.

Energetic Perspective

In the Five Element framework, overwhelm is a state of Earth depletion. Earth energy governs the spleen and stomach meridians, and when Earth is out of balance, we lose our capacity to receive nourishment — from food, from rest, from relationships, from stillness.

We give endlessly but cannot absorb what is offered in return. We nourish everyone around us while our own reserves run dry.

Energetically, the field of someone in deep overwhelm often feels scattered or diffuse — as if their energy is pulled in too many directions simultaneously, with no coherent center. There is a quality of spinning without grounding. Of doing without being.

The energetic prescription is return to center. To Earth. To the ground beneath you.

When we lose our center, everything feels urgent. When we return to it, we can see clearly what actually requires our attention — and what we have been carrying out of fear, not necessity.

The Healing Prescription

⚘ Energetic Healing Prescription

1. Ground First

Begin each morning with two minutes of conscious contact with the earth. Stand barefoot on grass, soil, or wood. If indoors, press your feet firmly into the floor and breathe into the soles of your feet. Feel the ground receive your weight. Let it hold you.

2. The One-Thing Practice

When overwhelm hits, stop adding to your list. Ask instead: What is the one thing, if I did only this today, that would matter most? Do that one thing. The rest can wait longer than you believe it can.

3. Nourish Before You Give

Earth energy is depleted by giving without receiving. This week, identify one thing that genuinely nourishes you — a meal eaten slowly, a walk without your phone, a conversation that leaves you feeling full rather than drained. Protect that practice as non-negotiable.

4. The Breath Reset

When you feel overwhelm rising: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 8. The extended exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system and signals safety to the body. Repeat five times. This is the fastest physiological path from overwhelmed to regulated.

5. Audit Your Yes

Spend ten minutes this week writing down everything you are currently responsible for. Circle what is genuinely yours. Put a question mark beside what you inherited, absorbed, or took on out of fear or obligation. You do not need to act on it today — simply seeing it clearly is the beginning of change.

Reflection Questions

Reflection Questions

What am I currently carrying that does not belong to me?

Where in my life do I give without allowing myself to receive?

What belief is keeping me from asking for help or setting a boundary?

What would I do differently this week if I trusted that it was safe to do less?

What does my body need most right now — and what has kept me from giving it that?

Weekly Reset Practice

Each evening this week, take five minutes before sleep for what I call the Daily Deposit:

Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly.

Take three slow breaths, feeling your body soften with each exhale.

Ask yourself: What did I give today? Then ask: What did I receive?

If the giving outweighed the receiving, name one way you will nourish yourself tomorrow.

Before you sleep, say aloud or silently: I have done enough. I am enough. I am allowed to rest.

Do this for seven consecutive nights. Notice what shifts.

This Month’s Affirmation

“I release what is not mine to carry. I receive what is here to nourish me. I am grounded, supported, and held — by the earth, by my body, and by my own returning wisdom.”

Shift Happens. Create Magic.
