Building Futures Through Education: Alda Messiah's Vision for Ascentia Career Institute

Alda Messiah is an immigrant from South Africa and the Executive Director of both colleges. With more than 30 years of experience in the education sector, she is passionate about creating opportunities for students from all backgrounds and helping individuals gain practical skills that lead to meani

For more than three decades, Alda Messiah has been building something more valuable than an institution—she has been building possibility. Born in South Africa and shaped by the transformative power of education, she arrived in Canada carrying a mission that has never wavered: to open doors for people who need them most.

Today, as the founder and Executive Director of Ascentia Career Institute, Alda leads an institution where students don’t just gain credentials—they gain confidence, direction, and a community that believes in them from their very first day. Her approach is hands-on, personal, and deeply intentional. She greets students by name. She shows up before anyone else. She makes sure that everyone who walks through those doors knows they belong.

In this exclusive conversation with Elemental Reset Magazine, Alda Messiah shares what makes Ascentia different, what keeps her inspired through thirty years of educational leadership, and why she believes it is never—truly never—too late to invest in yourself.

What Makes Ascentia Different?

What makes Ascentia different? If someone were walking through Ascentia Career Institute for the very first time, what do you hope they would notice or feel that sets the school apart?

What sets Ascentia apart is the feeling that students truly matter. From the moment you walk in, you can sense a supportive, welcoming environment where people are encouraged, challenged, and set up for success. Ascentia is more than a college. We combine career-focused training with personalized support, so students feel confident, connected, and ready for the workforce.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Ascentia continues to grow and evolve. What exciting opportunities or new programs are you most looking forward to sharing with future students?

As Ascentia continues to grow, I’m excited about expanding our program offerings to meet evolving workforce needs, strengthening industry partnerships, and creating even more pathways to meaningful careers. Our focus remains on providing practical, industry-relevant education that leads to real opportunities. Most of all, I’m excited about helping more students gain the skills, confidence, and support they need to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.

The Elemental Five

What inspires you every day?

What inspires me every day is seeing the transformation in our students. Many arrive with goals, challenges, and aspirations, and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch them gain confidence, develop new skills, and move toward meaningful careers. Knowing that the work we do changes lives and creates opportunities for individuals, families, and communities is what motivates me most.

What daily habit has had the greatest impact on your success?

One daily habit that has had the greatest impact on my success is showing up early and being present. I make it a point to be at work on time every day and personally greet students, instructors, and staff. Those simple interactions help build relationships, create a welcoming environment, and let people know they are valued. I believe when people feel seen, respected, and important, they are more confident, engaged, and successful. It’s a small habit, but it sets the tone for our entire campus culture.

When life becomes overwhelming, how do you personally reset?

When life becomes overwhelming, I reset by going back to what matters most: people, perspective, and gratitude. Taking a walk, spending time with family, and giving myself a moment to reflect helps me refocus. I also find that connecting with students and staff reminds me of our purpose and the impact of the work we do every day. Sometimes the best reset is simply slowing down, taking a deep breath, and remembering why you started.

What advice would you give someone who’s afraid to take the first step?

My advice is simple: don’t wait until you’re ready. Most meaningful opportunities begin with uncertainty. The first step is often the hardest, but it’s also the most important. Have confidence in yourself, focus on progress rather than perfection, and remember that growth happens outside your comfort zone. Every successful person started exactly where you are now—by taking that first step despite their fears.

What does “Shift Happens. Create Magic.” mean to you?

To me, ‘Shift Happens. Create Magic.’ is a reminder that change is inevitable, but how we respond to it is our choice. Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and challenges, setbacks, and unexpected opportunities are all part of the journey. The magic happens when we embrace those shifts, stay positive, and use them as opportunities to learn, grow, and create something better. I’ve seen that happen time and again with our students. They take a chance on themselves, step outside their comfort zone, and transform their lives. That’s the kind of magic that inspires me every day.

One Final Thought

If there’s one thing I’d want readers to remember, it’s that it’s never too late to invest in yourself. One decision, one course, or one step outside your comfort zone can completely change the direction of your life. I’ve seen firsthand how education builds confidence, opens doors, and creates opportunities. Believe in your potential, take that first step, and trust that growth is possible. Your future can be greater than you imagine.

It’s never too late to invest in yourself. One decision, one course, or one step outside your comfort zone can completely change the direction of your life.

Alda Messiah has spent thirty years proving that the right environment—one built on belief, structure, and genuine care—can transform a life. At Ascentia Career Institute, that environment is not an accident. It is the product of thousands of intentional daily choices: showing up early, learning every student’s name, and maintaining a campus culture where growth is not only possible but expected. For every person who has ever questioned whether a new beginning is within reach, Alda’s life and work offer a clear and powerful answer: it is. And she has built the place to prove it.
