A Back-to-School Elemental Reset
A Five Element check-in for students, teachers, and anyone beginning a new chapter
By Dr. Constance Santego
Before you step into this new season, take a few minutes to check in with all five of your elements. This guided reset will help you arrive — in a classroom, a business, or a new commitment — more grounded, clear, and ready.
The beginning of a new learning season carries a particular kind of energy. There is anticipation and anxiety in equal measure. There is hope and uncertainty woven together. And underneath all of it, a question your whole being is asking: *Am I ready for this?*
The Five Element framework offers a beautiful way to approach that question — not by demanding a confident "yes," but by asking where you are in each element and what support you need to show up more fully.
## How to Use This Reset
Find a quiet place with a journal and a pen. Move through each element in order. For each one, pause with the check-in question and then try the suggested micro-reset. There is no right answer and no wrong experience.

## 🌳 Wood Element — Clarity and Direction
*Organs: Liver and Gallbladder | Season: Spring | Emotion: Frustration / Vision*
The Wood element governs your capacity for vision, planning, and the ability to move decisively forward. At the start of a new season, Wood asks: *Do I know where I'm going? Am I frustrated with the pace of progress? Am I flexible enough to adapt when the plan changes?*
**Check-in Question:** On a scale of 1–10, how clear am I about what I am working toward this season? What am I most anxious about?
**Micro-Reset:** Write three things you are moving toward this season — not a to-do list, but a direction. "I am moving toward mastery." "I am moving toward finishing what I started." "I am moving toward a version of myself who is no longer afraid of this." Let the vision live on paper.

## 🔥 Fire Element — Connection and Joy
*Organs: Heart and Small Intestine | Season: Summer | Emotion: Anxiety / Joy*
The Fire element governs your relationships, your ability to receive warmth, and your capacity for genuine joy in what you are doing. Fire asks: *Am I showing up with presence and warmth, or am I too scattered or guarded to connect?*
**Check-in Question:** What brings me genuine joy in my learning or work right now? Who do I want to connect with more intentionally this season?
**Micro-Reset:** Send one message to someone you appreciate — a classmate, a mentor, a colleague, a student — just to say that you value them. Reconnect to the human part of this work.

## 🌍 Earth Element — Nourishment and Stability
*Organs: Spleen and Stomach | Season: Late Summer | Emotion: Worry / Nurturing*
The Earth element governs your capacity to receive nourishment, feel grounded, and create stability for yourself and others. Back-to-school season can activate Earth's shadow: worry, overthinking, and forgetting to eat well. Earth asks: *Am I taking care of the basics? Am I grounded in my body or spinning in my head?*
**Check-in Question:** How am I nourishing myself physically this season? What habit am I neglecting that I know matters?
**Micro-Reset:** Make one commitment to your physical nourishment this week — one consistent meal, one fewer skipped breakfast, one extra glass of water before your morning begins. Small. Concrete. Doable.

## ⚗️ Metal Element — Boundaries and Letting Go
*Organs: Lung and Large Intestine | Season: Autumn | Emotion: Grief / Inspiration*
The Metal element governs your ability to set boundaries, release what no longer serves you, and breathe. New beginnings often require endings — old habits, old stories, old versions of yourself that need to be released so the new chapter can actually begin. Metal asks: *What am I holding onto that is making this harder? What needs to be let go?*
**Check-in Question:** What belief, habit, or relationship am I carrying into this season that is weighing me down? What would it mean to release it?
**Micro-Reset:** Take three slow, full breaths. With each exhale, visualize releasing something you no longer need. Name it silently: "I release ___." You don't have to have it fully figured out — the intention is enough to begin.
---
## 💧 Water Element — Wisdom and Willingness
*Organs: Kidney and Bladder | Season: Winter | Emotion: Fear / Wisdom*
The Water element governs your deepest reserves of courage, wisdom, and the will to continue. It is the element of beginning — and of fear. Back-to-school activates Water because beginning something new always carries fear: of failure, of judgment, of not being enough. Water asks: *Do I trust myself? Am I willing to not know everything and keep going anyway?*
**Check-in Question:** What am I most afraid of this season? What would it mean to choose courage in that area anyway?
**Micro-Reset:** Write this phrase and finish it: "Even though I am afraid of _____, I am willing to begin because _____." Keep this somewhere you can see it.

## Putting It Together
After moving through all five elements, look at what you wrote. Notice which element brought up the most for you — that is often where your most important work lives right now.
There is no element you need to be perfect in. There is no score. There is only the honest awareness of where you are, and the simple act of beginning from exactly that place.
You don't have to be ready. You just have to begin.
